Which directories are actually worth listing your business on

There are well over a hundred business directories on the web, and every one of them will tell you they're essential. Almost none of them actually are. Here's the honest breakdown, roughly in the order we'd tackle it.

The three that matter most aren't really "directories"

Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places don't work like citation sites — they're the actual databases that Google Maps, Siri and Bing pull from when someone searches. Get these three right and you've done more for your visibility than the other hundred combined. Skip them and nothing else on this list will make up the difference.

A short list of general directories worth bothering with

Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex, Scoot, Hotfrog, Cylex and 192.com are worth being on. Not because anyone's actually browsing them looking for a business — hardly anyone is — but because Google checks your name, address and phone number against the wider web to confirm you're real. Once you're consistently listed on fifteen or twenty of these, more stops making much difference. It's a box-ticking exercise, and once it's ticked, it's ticked.

After that it gets industry-specific. Tradespeople do well on Checkatrade, MyBuilder or Rated People. Restaurants and cafés want to be on TripAdvisor. And almost everyone benefits from a Trustpilot presence now, mostly because AI tools like ChatGPT lean on it when someone asks for recommendations.

What to avoid entirely

If anyone offers to list your business on five hundred directories for under fifty quid, say no. These are low-quality directory networks Google stopped trusting years ago, and the real cost isn't the fifty pounds — it's the mess of scattered, slightly-wrong business details across the web that someone (probably you, or us) ends up having to clean up later.

The one thing that actually matters more than any of this

Keep your name, address and phone number identical, word for word, everywhere. Not "Ltd" on one listing and nothing on another. Not an old number still sitting on a directory from three years ago. That kind of inconsistency does more damage to your local search ranking than simply not being listed somewhere would. Get the basics right and consistent before chasing more listings — it's the boring advice, but it's the one that actually moves the needle.
